Tawang (Arunachal Pradesh) [India], August 25: Registration has officially opened for the fourth edition of the Tawang Marathon (TM2026), one of the world’s highest-altitude road races. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the northeastern Himalayas, the event invites national and international runners to compete at 10,000 feet above sea level under the banner: “Run above the clouds, leave behind a legacy”, Tawang Marathon 2026 is scheduled for October 24th next. Affiliated with the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), Tawang Marathon 2026 offers athletes certified route standards, professional timing systems, and a competitive purse of ₹65 lakh — making it one of the most lucrative destination marathons in the country. At nearly 3,050 meters above sea level, the race presents a serious physiological challenge even for seasoned distance runners. Thinner air, lower oxygen pressure, and rapid weather shifts demand careful preparation. To mitigate altitude-related risks, race organizers are urging participants to arrive in Tawang two to three days prior to race day for mandatory acclimatization, BIB collection, and medical evaluation. Event operations are backed by full-scale medical coverage, military-grade aid stations, and comprehensive logistical support from the Indian Army to ensure runner safety along the mountainous course.

The ₹65-lakh prize pool spans all official race distances — the Full Marathon, Half Marathon, 10km, and 5km Fun Run — and covers multiple age groups ranging from under-18 to 60-and-above. To encourage regional participation and honor local service, organizers have instituted a 50 percent registration fee concession for defense personnel and residents of Arunachal Pradesh. Nationwide promotional runs across major Indian cities are also underway to build momentum and attract broad competitive fields.
