New Delhi [India], June 05: Shiv Sena MLA Suhas Babar’s unique environmental initiative, Tree Army, which is steadily transforming environmental conservation into a social movement, has now received a major boost with the support of Bollywood actor Jackie Shroff. Known as one of the strongest advocates and ambassadors of environmental conservation, Jackie Shroff’s association is expected to give the campaign greater visibility and impact.
The initiative began in MLA Suhas Babar’s Khanapur-Atpadi constituency, but gradually more people joined the movement, helping it gain attention across Maharashtra. With Jackie Shroff now becoming part of the mission, there is growing hope that the campaign will expand beyond Maharashtra and inspire people across India and even globally.
What is the ‘Tree Army’ Campaign? Why is it Becoming So Popular?
The Tree Army initiative has gained rapid popularity because it is not limited to simply planting trees. Instead, it has evolved into a large-scale green movement driven by active public participation.
The campaign began with an effort to save a Peepal tree by relocating it safely instead of cutting it down. That thought gradually inspired more people to become involved. Participants in the movement are contributing through land, water, saplings, and voluntary labor.
During the Assembly elections, MLA Suhas Babar had announced that he would plant trees equivalent to the margin by which he won the election. Following that commitment, he pledged to plant nearly 78,000 saplings, matching the number of votes by which he secured victory. Thousands of trees have already been planted, and several social organizations have also joined the initiative.

The increasing participation of people in the Tree Army plantation drives has already shown how a small initiative can gradually evolve into a large-scale movement for social change.
Target of Planting 78,000 Trees Within Two Years
On this occasion, MLA Suhas Babar clarified that Tree Army is not associated with any particular political ideology or party, but is an initiative aimed at bringing together every section of society.
He stated that the campaign’s goal is to plant trees equal to the number of votes received during the Assembly elections, with a target of planting 78,000 saplings over the next two years.
According to him, Jackie Shroff’s involvement will provide the campaign with a stronger national identity. What began as an initiative in the Vita region is now moving toward becoming a major social movement, combining environmental awareness and public participation to create a new and greener vision for society.
