Important news for bank customers! Banks will remain closed for 10 days between October 17 and October 31; check the full list.
Bank customers across India need to plan carefully as a series of holidays falls between 17 and 31 October 2026. The period covers the peak of the festive season, including Maha Saptami, Dussehra, Durga Puja and regular weekend closures. While not every branch will shut for 10 consecutive days, many centres will see multiple non-working days, disrupting branch visits, cheque clearances and cash transactions.
According to the Reserve Bank of India’s official holiday calendar, banks remain closed on all Sundays and on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month. In addition, several regional and festival holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act apply only in specific cities and states. Digital services such as UPI, mobile banking and internet banking will continue to function as usual.
Customers are advised to complete urgent branch-related work in advance and check the exact holiday status for their city before visiting.

Why Holidays Differ Across States
Bank holidays in India are not uniform. National holidays such as Gandhi Jayanti apply everywhere, but festival dates linked to Durga Puja, Dussehra and regional observances follow local calendars. Eastern and North-Eastern states typically observe longer closures around Durga Puja, while many western and northern centres close mainly on Vijaya Dashami (20 October).
Sikkim (Gangtok) has the longest stretch this year with consecutive holidays from 19 to 23 October for Dasain. Customers in these regions should plan cash withdrawals and cheque deposits well in advance.
Impact on Banking Services
Branch operations, cash deposits, withdrawals, demand draft issuance and cheque clearing will be affected on the listed holidays. RTGS and NEFT timings may also see adjustments on some days. However, ATM withdrawals, UPI payments, IMPS, mobile banking and internet banking remain available 24×7.
Those with EMI payments, bill payments or salary credits falling on these dates are advised to ensure sufficient balance or complete transactions early to avoid late fees or inconvenience.
How to Check Your Local Holiday Status
The most reliable source is the official RBI holiday matrix available on the Reserve Bank of India website. Customers can also check their bank’s app or website, or contact the local branch. Holiday lists are updated periodically, so a final verification a day or two in advance is recommended.
Please note: Between October 15 and October 30, bank holidays will vary significantly depending on the city. Banks will remain closed nationwide on October 18, 24, and 25, while other major holidays will apply only in select cities. Therefore, be sure to check the holiday schedule for your specific city before visiting a bank.
