BITS Design School (BITSDES), Mumbai, has officially opened applications for its four-year Bachelor of Design (Honours) programme for the 2027 academic intake. The school plans to admit 210 students to the fully residential programme. Interested candidates have until January 31, 2027, to submit their applications.
The announcement marks another step in the expansion of specialised design education under the BITS Pilani ecosystem. The programme follows a transdisciplinary model that blends design with technology, business and public policy, preparing students for complex real-world challenges.

This exploratory structure allows students to gain hands-on exposure across domains before committing to a focused track. The curriculum also includes industry projects, community assignments, an eight-week internship after the second year, and a longer practice-school placement in the final year.
Candidates must have passed or be appearing for the 10+2 (or equivalent) examination from a recognised board in any stream. A minimum aggregate of 45 percent is required. There is no restriction on the subjects studied in Class 12, making the programme accessible to students from science, commerce and arts backgrounds alike.
In addition to the academic requirement, applicants must have appeared for or registered for at least one of the following design aptitude tests: the BITS Design Aptitude Test (BITSDAT), the Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED) conducted by IIT Bombay, or the National Institute of Design Design Aptitude Test (NID DAT) Prelims.
Application Deadline and Important Dates
The last date to submit the online application is January 31, 2027. The application fee is ₹2,500. Only candidates who complete the application by this deadline will be allowed to upload their entrance test scores later in the process.
Key dates for the 2027 admission cycle are as follows:
BITSDAT examination window: March 29 to April 5, 2027 Upload of BITSDAT, UCEED or NID DAT Prelims scores: April 6 to April 10, 2027 Shortlist announcement: April 14, 2027 Portfolio upload window: April 14 to April 22, 2027 Online interviews: May 4 to May 15, 2027 Final admission results: May 20, 2027
BITSDES has reserved the right to revise these dates if required.
Selection Process Explained
BITSDAT is a mandatory one-hour online test for all applicants. Even candidates who already hold UCEED or NID DAT Prelims scores must appear for BITSDAT. After the test, candidates upload their best relative score (from BITSDAT, UCEED or NID DAT Prelims) on the application portal during the designated window.
A shortlist is prepared on the basis of the highest relative score. Shortlisted candidates then submit a design portfolio and appear for an online interview. The final selection considers the entrance score, portfolio quality and interview performance.
The multi-stage process aims to evaluate both aptitude and creative potential rather than relying solely on a single written examination.
Fees and Scholarships
The approximate annual cost includes a tuition fee of ₹7,70,000 and a residential fee of ₹2,27,000, bringing the yearly total to around ₹9,97,000. A one-time admission fee of ₹40,000 and a security deposit of ₹20,000 are payable at the time of accepting the offer.
BITSDES offers merit-based and merit-cum-means scholarships that can cover a significant portion of the fees for eligible students. The Chancellor’s Scholarship provides a full tuition fee waiver to selected high-potential candidates, along with opportunities for international exposure and internships facilitated by the Chancellor’s Office.
Why This Programme Stands Out
Unlike traditional design schools that often emphasise studio practice in isolation, the BITSDES curriculum deliberately integrates technology, entrepreneurship and systems thinking. Students engage with real industry briefs, community projects and a structured Practice School component that places them in professional environments for extended periods.
The five-pathway model in the early semesters reduces the pressure of early specialisation and allows students to discover their strengths through direct experience. This approach is particularly relevant in a design landscape that increasingly demands hybrid skills spanning physical products, digital interfaces, research and experiential storytelling.
