From the Workshop Floor to Dairy Processing Projects: Himpreet Kaur’s Entrepreneurial Journey

Starting with the Requirements of Dairy Businesses

In its early years, NK Dairy Equipments worked with dairy units requiring machinery and basic processing systems. Rather than beginning with large integrated projects, the business developed through equipment manufacturing and practical exposure to dairy operations.

For Himpreet Kaur, this meant understanding what processors actually required from their machinery.

A machine may meet its technical specifications and still be unsuitable for a particular plant if its capacity, layout or operating conditions have not been properly considered. This practical difference between manufacturing equipment and understanding its application became important as the business developed.

Over time, customer requirements became more varied. Some dairies needed additional equipment, while others were expanding capacity or moving into processed dairy products. Each project brought a different set of conditions.

Those experiences gradually widened the scope of the company’s work.

Learning Through Projects

Manufacturing businesses are often shaped by what happens after equipment leaves the workshop.

Installation, commissioning and everyday operation can reveal issues that are difficult to understand from drawings alone. Available floor space, utility connections, pipeline routes, maintenance access and production schedules can all influence the way equipment performs within a plant.

This project-level experience became part of NK Dairy Equipments’ development.

The company moved beyond supplying individual dairy machines and became involved in broader processing requirements. As the scale of projects changed, engineering decisions increasingly had to consider how different sections of a dairy plant would operate together.

For Kaur, the transition represented a change in responsibility as well. Running the business was no longer limited to manufacturing and supplying equipment. It involved understanding a client’s processing requirements, identifying suitable machinery and coordinating the practical work required to put a system into operation.

Building Through Repeat Work

Growth in an engineering business does not always come from rapid expansion. It can also develop through completed projects, repeat business and the gradual accumulation of technical experience.

As processing requirements expanded, some customers returned to increase capacity or add new capabilities to their existing facilities. Such projects presented a different challenge from supplying equipment to a new facility. Expansion work requires an understanding of what is already operating and how additional capacity can be introduced without unnecessarily disrupting the existing plant.

This kind of work helped broaden the company’s experience from equipment manufacturing toward plant-level requirements.

It also reflected a simple principle that has remained relevant throughout the business: the equipment selected for a dairy should correspond to what the processor actually needs.

From Individual Equipment to Integrated Plants

The dairy sector itself was changing during these years.

Processors were moving beyond basic milk handling and increasingly investing in mechanised production and value-added products. Paneer, curd, butter, ghee, khoa and other dairy products brought different processing requirements into facilities that had traditionally concentrated on liquid milk.

Equipment manufacturers had to adapt to that change.

NK Dairy Equipments gradually expanded from supplying standalone machinery to working on integrated dairy processing systems. Independent media coverage of the company has described this transition as one driven largely by project experience and changing operational requirements within the dairy sector.

For Himpreet Kaur and the team around her, this meant dealing with a wider engineering picture. Tanks, processing equipment, pipelines, utilities and cleaning arrangements could no longer be treated separately when they were expected to operate as one production system.

A Woman-Led Manufacturing Journey

Kaur’s career has developed within an engineering and manufacturing environment rather than a consumer-facing business.

Her work has involved a field where much of the activity happens away from public view—in fabrication workshops, processing plants and project sites. Her role has involved working with engineers, technicians and craftsmen on milk-processing projects.

The nature of that work has required a combination of commercial and technical decision-making. Equipment has to be manufactured, but it also has to match production capacity and the conditions in which it will eventually operate.

Rather than separating those two sides of the business, Kaur’s approach has developed around understanding the processing requirement before recommending the machinery.

That practical approach became increasingly relevant as the company took on more complex dairy projects.

Moving Beyond the Domestic Market

The company’s development eventually extended beyond projects in India.

Working in different markets introduces additional considerations for an equipment manufacturer. Plant capacities vary, infrastructure conditions differ and project requirements may not be the same from one customer or country to another.

For a manufacturing business that began by serving dairy processors from Haryana, participation in overseas projects represented another stage in its development.

It also required the company to move from familiarity with local operating conditions toward equipment and processing solutions that could be adapted to different project environments.

Two Decades of Change

The dairy equipment industry of 2005 is not the same industry that manufacturers work in today.

Processing has become more organised, automation has increased and dairies are paying greater attention to hygiene, energy use, production consistency and value-added products. Customers also expect manufacturers to understand how individual machines fit into the wider production system.

NK Dairy Equipments has developed during this period of change.

Its journey from equipment manufacturing toward integrated processing projects has taken place gradually, shaped by the requirements encountered across different dairy plants.

For Himpreet Kaur, the same period represents more than the growth of a business. It reflects the experience of building a manufacturing enterprise through technical work, customer requirements and years spent understanding an industry from the plant floor upward.

There was no single project that defined that journey. It was built through successive installations, expansions, technical decisions and the everyday realities of manufacturing.

That perhaps provides the clearest account of the company’s development. What started with dairy equipment in 2005 gradually became a wider involvement in dairy processing infrastructure, while Kaur’s role developed alongside it—from running a manufacturing operation to overseeing projects with broader engineering requirements.

Her journey reflects how long-term manufacturing businesses are often built: not through one moment of expansion, but through accumulated experience, adaptation and the ability to keep pace with the industry they serve.
