“Dr. O. P. Singh Offers Modern Solutions for Water Management and Flood Resilience in Drainage Engineering”
New Delhi [India], September 8: Effective drainage systems are fundamental to managing water resources, protecting infrastructure and reducing the risks associated with flooding, waterlogging and soil degradation. Addressing these interconnected challenges, Dr. O. P. Singh’sDrainage Engineering presents a comprehensive examination of drainage principles, design practices and emerging technologies for diverse natural and built environments.
The book brings together foundational concepts in hydrology, soil-water interactions and drainage planning with practical approaches to solving drainage problems across agricultural, urban, coastal, industrial and infrastructure settings. It covers surface, subsurface and vertical drainage systems while also examining specialised applications involving highways, airports, mines, forests and tea gardens.
A key strength of Drainage Engineering is its integration of conventional engineering principles with contemporary technologies. The book explores topographic and geospatial surveys, remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), drainage modelling and simulation, water quality management, sediment and erosion control, and flood routing. It also considers how digital transformation and artificial intelligence can contribute to the planning, monitoring and management of modern drainage projects.

The book addresses the growing pressures placed on drainage infrastructure by rapid urbanisation, climate change and inadequate water management systems. Alongside structural interventions such as subsurface drains, pumping stations and flood protection works, it discusses non-structural approaches including monitoring, forecasting, planning and policy frameworks. These perspectives make the book particularly relevant to contemporary efforts towards flood mitigation, resilient infrastructure and sustainable water resource development.
With its broad coverage and practical orientation, Drainage Engineering is designed to serve students, researchers, consultants and practising engineers. It can also provide a useful reference for professionals involved in infrastructure planning, irrigation, flood management, groundwater recharge and environmental water management.
The book reflects Dr. Singh’s extensive professional experience in irrigation, drainage and water resource management. Rather than limiting drainage engineering to a single application, it approaches the discipline as a wide-ranging field requiring coordination between engineering, hydrology, technology, environmental considerations and long-term planning.
Through Drainage Engineering, Dr. O. P. Singh seeks to bring together knowledge accumulated through decades of research, consultancy and work on water management projects in India and abroad. The book is intended not only as a technical reference but also as a means of sharing professional experience and practical knowledge with those working towards more effective solutions to drainage and flood-related challenges.
